The news article online dated 1 February 2011 was about an article where a mum forces a boy to do homework outdoors at 9.30pm alone. Imagine you being left alone outdoors to do homework; well this is what this young boy of about 6 years of age went through at a badminton court in Sembawang.

Armed with a chair, he was brought by his mom to the badminton court to complete his homework on the bench which acted like a study table. While she leaves his son at the badminton court for about 15 minutes, she went off to somewhere. (It didn’t state).

I feel that she should not leave the young boy there at night alone while she went off. Is he trying to punish him? Even if there is no available study room at home, the least the mom could have done was to stay with the boy there throughout. This is because anything dangerous could have happened to him during this short 15 minutes as he was still too young to protect himself. No matter what sort of reasons, his son’s safety should be of higher priority.

The news article online dated 26 January 2011 was about a stimulated terror attack at Resorts World. Singapore authorities stimulated a terror attack on Tuesday, 25 January to test the emergency preparedness of the Home Team and the security teams from Resorts World Sentosa, one of the Singapore’s newest tourist attractions. This is the first time one of the two Integrated Resorts was participating in such a large scale exercise.

It started with a suspicious package in an auditorium that no one noticed. Soon smoke filled the room and guests were evacuated. Security agencies were alerted and deployed to the scene. “This exercise serves as a reminder of Singapore’s ongoing battle against terrorism which can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere,” Minister, Lim Swee Say said.

People do not really care about a terrorist stimulation; they often behave in this manner. I saw a terrorist attack, I know that it was not real; you knew that it was not real and both of us will be smiling. However, what will happen if it is a real terrorist attack that takes place? In Singapore, we are fighting a war, fighting a battle against global terrorism.

This is why schools held fire drills to train students to react fast when an emergency happens. During a crisis, the first responder at the scene is very important because lives can be saved if the first responder knows how to react promptly, calmly and confidently. Hence, we should always take these drills seriously so that we will know what to do when the real thing happens.

The news article online dated 19 January 2011 is about a guy who steals a laptop in the restaurant right under the owner’s nose. However, the owner and his friends are totally oblivious to their surroundings. The thief can be seen using his feet to drag the bag by its strap towards him, before stealing the laptop inside. This man was caught on CCTV stealing a laptop in a restaurant, even though the owner was close by. Most amazingly, the thief managed to get away without being caught.

I am actually impressed by the thief’s actions because he managed to steal the owner’s belongings even right under the owner’s nose. The bag is just on the floor beside the owner and yet he didn’t even notice that someone manage to pull his bag away, open it and even manage to steal his laptop. Even his friends nearby him didn’t manage to catch the thief’s actions as they were so engrossed in their conversations. Despite the waiters walking around, none of them saw what he did.

I personally think that people should learn to look after their belongings well and keep them within sight. Thieves are getting bolder these days. Even right under the owner’s nose, things can get lost when they not well taken care of. They are so skilful nowadays that they can even steal and get away unnoticed by any of the friends nearby. It can happen to any of us here, so beware.

The news article dated online was about 10 January 2011 was about a youth who was seen scaffolding at Temasek Polytechnic just for dare. He was seen climbing up some scaffolding which reaches the ceiling in the school’s Engineering faculty. Apparently, the young man was risking his own safety just for the sake of winning a dare. Despite his friends telling him that he has won and asking him to get down, the young man ignores and continues to climb upwards.

Does he even know that such a rash act could cause him a lifetime misery if something unfortunate were to happen to him? Have he ever thought that if something were to happen to him, who were to take care of his parents? Such a foolish act done by him will not make people think that he is heroic or brave but however, think that he is stubborn and stupid. To him, he might think that one must keep his word and do what is suppose to do if he lose the game. However, I feel that his friends shouldn’t even start by suggesting this kind of dangerous dares in the first place. Not only it would cause injury, but also even life if something unfortunate were to happen.

For the sake of having fun, teenagers do not think of the consequences behind it. Well, a moment of folly could cause a lifetime of regrets. He may need to depend on his family members if he were to fall and which might cause severe injury.

The news article online dated 5^th January 2011 was about a boy, who was injured in the Chua Chu Kang lift, when the ceiling board fell, was actually a culprit. It says that CCTV footage showed that he is seen climbing onto the hand railings in the lift, which have been installed for the convenience of residents, especially our elderly. However, based on the footage, the boy gained a foothold on the railings and reached out to touch the lift ceiling board. It was at that point of time where the ceiling board gave way and fell.

The ceiling board fell on the boy just when he was stepping out of the lift and escaped with few scratches. I feel that the boy deserved this as he is not even supposed to play or climb around in the lift in the first place. Lifts are meant to use properly and of course any misuse or tampering with the lifts and lift parks may lead to malfunction or faults. It may cause injury to other residents or so too. The boy’s parents ought to teach him a lesson letting him know the importance of tampering or vandalizing the public places will lead to a fine. Not only climbing or playing in the lift is not allowed, vandalizing by using a marker to draw around or peeing around at public places is not allowed.

It is fortunate that the boy did not suffer any serious injury and I hope that from this lesson, he would not try anything funny in the lift again.

The news article which I read online dated 2 Jan 2011 was about a young couple in school uniform to be holding hands in public and acting all intimate with each other. The STOMPer felt that it is inappropriate for them to wear their school uniforms and do that in front of others.

Well, I agree to a great extent. It is common nowadays to see couples behaving intimately with each other nowadays, not just purely holding hands, but touching each other all around the body whether they are in the bus, library or any other public places. They can go to the extent where the female sit on the male’s lap and the man will touch and caressed the girl on her legs and all other parts of her body even in public places. I personally feel that these people are shameless. Why are they doing all these in front of others? They want to show the public or they just don’t bother about what other people think? Even if other people were to stare at them, they can continue with their intimate actions as though they were in their own world and ignore them. While to some other people, some of these couple do mind if people were to look at them doing these intimate actions like kissing on the bus etc. When people stare at them, they make a fuss out of it and start scolding them.

I guess they didn’t know how irritating it is for the public to see all these intimate actions especially in public and sometimes even the sound they make. I feel that it is inappropriate for students in school uniform to behave intimately with each other as it will definitely affect the school’s reputation and also couples should not do these intimate actions in public. Holding hands is fine, but don’t go around touching the body especially in public places.

The news article which I read online dated 27 December 2010 was about a woman who exposes butt crack at coffee shop. “She was talking to her friends while exposing her butt crack.”

It is an common sight to see people especially girls and aunties exposing their butts in public places, whether done purposely or not. It is impossible for them not knowing that they are exposing so much of their flesh unknowingly. “Surely the cool air will give a breezy sensation to her skin or is her skin too thick to feel it?” Perhaps this auntie is too lazy to even pull up her pants and just can’t be bothered with it. But why do people want to dress in such low hip body pants to risk exposure of their butts and get unwanted attention from the public? There are also some people who may be exposing their butt cracks knowingly and they feel that it’s a trend and fashion to expose their butt crack.

Due to the rising trend of skinny low- rise jeans which has been made popular by fashion critics, exposure of butt cracks especially by women is getting common nowadays. By exposing your butt crack knowingly or unknowingly will not only get unwanted attention and it’s likely to put off people’s appetite. I hope that all males and females will have the decency to pull down your shirt and only surface your buttocks only when you are in the toilet or sleeping.

The news article which I read online dated 25^th December 2010 was about a secondary school boy posing with a cigarette pack. “He seems to be enjoying himself while taking the photos,” the STOMPer wrote.

In Singapore, persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to smoke, carry or purchase cigarettes. And yet, this boy who is wearing his school uniform seems to be enjoying himself while posing with the cigarettes. Did he get these cigarettes from his parents or friends? I feel that parents who do smoke do give a bad influence on their child and they will learn from them. Even if school tried their best to teach them, letting them know that smoking is bad for health and will cause yellow teeth, difficulty breathing or even lung cancer, etc they might think that they won’t be that unlucky to get lung cancer because their parents smoke more than them and yet, they are still as healthy as ever. Perhaps adults should try to not to smoke in front of their children or even try getting rid of the habit to smoke?

I feel that the school ought to give educational speech and let these students know that smoking is unhealthy and the dire consequences of smoking. There is a need for the school to let these teenagers know that smoking is not cool and also it will harm your body.

The news article which was dated online 15 December 2010, was regarding a sales manager who used camera pen to film women on escalators. He would clip the innocuous-looking pen to the side of his laptop bag. While going up the escalator, he would switch it on and place the bag under the skirt of women standing in front of him. He always targeted women wearing mid-length to short skirts, in places such as AMK hub, Compass Point and Junction 8. Videos were then transferred to his laptop and burned into a CD. He did all these just to obtain sexual thrills.

Are all these happening because girls are wearing too skimpily nowadays? People take advantage of cell phones, to capture video that they should not be. With small videos, they prowl around shopping malls and lurk around. And when they saw the victims, they start taking video of them unknowingly.

I feel that there is a need for girls to be cautious when walking up the stairs or escalators. They should be more alert with the people around them.

The news article which I read online dated 6 December 2010 was regarding a customer who was pissed with KFC by their actions. This customer bought a ‘Bargain Deal’ consisting of six-piece chicken, two cups of whipped potato, one cup of coleslaw and three cans of Pepsi from KFC delivery. They came without chilli sauce, spoons and napkins. Hence, this customer called and gave feedback. He requested for these items to be delivered to his house.

However, KFC delivered one big bag consisting of the spoons, chili sauce and napkins. The customer counted it and there were 72 packets of chilli sauce, 31 spoons and 32 napkins. Is KFC trying to be sarcastic or are they really apologetic?

If I were the customer, I believed I would be pissed by their actions. KFC doesn’t even seem apologetic at all! It just seems to be like KFC is not happy with the feedback that they received and they are trying to show their attitude by giving one big bag of chilli, spoons and napkins when I had only ordered a ‘Bargain Deal’. 72 packets! Even with two hands, you won’t even grab until 72 packets of chilli sauce. KFC might be thinking that I’m making a fuss out of it that just because of some chilli and napkins; I called and gave a feedback. However, it may be possible that the customer’s intention is to just give them a reminder so that they would not be so forgetful in the future.

Hence, I feel that there’s a need for KFC to apologize to the customer.

The news article which I read online dated December 1, 2010 was about a picture of youths fooling around with weapons. There was this guy in school uniform who wields a sword and pretends to behead his classmate.

After reading this article, I wonder why more and more people are carrying weapons around. Is it to protect themselves from gang attacks or is it possible that these people are involve in gang fights as well? I feel that the teachers in the school should stop them and let them know how severe it is to bring weapons around. Previously, a STOMPer came across pictures of youths posing with samurai swords and smoking in their school uniform. Another STOMPer was also shocked to see pictures of youths posing a parang and a cigarette on the MRT. These two youths were recently arrested but now out on bail and under investigation.

Teens seem to be walking around fearlessly with weapons, even with islandwide raids and arrests, in relation to the murder of 19 year old Darren Ng at Downtown East and the Bukit Panjang attacks, have been carried out. The increase in youth violence and teenagers carrying knifes are worrying trends. I seriously hope that the government can do something to help the situation.

The news article which I read online dated 21 November 2010 was about an animal abuse. It says about a woman who was filmed sitting on a bunny and crushing it to death to kill other bunnies, with the help of her girlfriends. For example, one woman was seen placing a bunny beneath a piece of glass and sitting on the glass, crushing the poor animal to death, as her two girlfriends laughed.

After reading this article, I felt disgusted by their actions. Nowadays, I feel that people do not have much compassion for animals. When they are irritated by actions done by the pet, they start to relieve their anger by abusing it. This is why the number of cases of animal abuse is arising.

The abuse may be done either by the pet owner or just any people to a stray cat/dog. Sometimes, it may be due to some actions done by the pet that irritates the owner, for example peeing on the ground or scratching on to his furniture for repeated number of times that the owner is now irritated and annoyed by its actions. This is when the pet owner abuses his pet like perhaps taking a broom to hit it or using hot water to pour over it. To him, he may think that he is educating his pet the right things. But in actual fact, it will cause the pet to cower away from the owner. A stray pet may also irritate a stranger when for instance, it happens to block his path by accidental. If the person has a fury temper and dislikes animals, the animal is in trouble. For example, there was once an article showing how a woman killed a cat using her heels which break off its head. This is one of the worse acts that a person has the heart to do something to a cat.

Hence, I feel that in order to stop these cases from happening, if anyone who knows or happen to see someone who is abusing an animal, stop the person immediately instead of acting as if you never saw anything. Think of the pet who is suffering right now. You will regret it if you happen to see that on the following day, the newspaper headlines show that the animal broke its head or whatsoever. Also, government should not be lenient to these abusers and let them off easily. They should have more television advertisements to remind people to be mindful of their actions and the consequences.

The news article which I read online dated 13 November 2010, was about a 26-year-old woman who was attacked in Yishun. She was enjoying happy hour with two male friends at Ginza Pub in Yishun along Sembawang Road when the unexpected happen.

She was confronted by a group of five women and one men in their late 20s who asked if she belonged to a gang. This group of girls started by saying she look cocky and added on to say that they don’t like the way she look. Before she managed to get back to her seat, this group of women and man came in with glass bottles and knives and started throwing at her. She suffered multiple slashes on her face, arms and legs and was sent to hospital. Her two male friends were also injured while trying to protect her.

After reading this news article and some of the news which I read about previously relating to gang fights, for example, the gang fight at Downtown East, I realized that many teenagers are using violence to solve matters or taking things into their own hands. For example, if the gang sees people whom they are not happy of, they say that they are staring at them, they look cocky and they don’t like the way the person look. Even if the person did not even provoke or even look at them in the first place, the person may have already offended this gang. They are already determined to attack him or her. Then, what are we supposed to do if we see a gang? If we were to look away and pretend that we didn’t see this gang of people, they may also say we look arrogant. So, does this means that if a gang approaches you, you are doom and just prepare yourself by getting attacked soon? Even if you call the police, they might not be able to get here in time and protect you. With all these gang fights and slashing going around, how is Singapore going to be a safe and civilized country? Hence, I feel that not only the police have to enforce a more sever law on this, but also take preventive measures to prevent all these from happening.

The newspaper article that I came across on The Straits Times, Sunday, 7 November 2010, was about how pushcart promoters promote their products nowadays.

Promoters nowadays are getting more persistent when selling their products and they will follow you until you stop by their pushcart and buy their products. They can deftly throw a herbal wrap over your shoulders, whip out hair curlers and teasingly tug at your hair to draw your attention. They will then grab your hand and pull you to their pushcart and start promoting and convince you to buy the product.

After reading this article, I agree to a great extent that promoters are persistent and too pushy in selling their products and that I once had a hard time rejecting them. This promoter was promoting a product that is used to buff your nails. As I walked pass her, she just grabbed onto my hand and started using the product on my nails. Although this product was pretty effective as I can see that after she helped me to buff my nails, my nails did shine. However, I had no intention of buying at all as the product was far too expensive. I rejected by smiling, but she kept holding on to my arm. I took some time to get rid of her by saying I’m rushing for time.

At her point of view, I know that what these promoters did were not totally wrong as they were trying to earn more money and commission by selling more products in all sorts of ways. However, it may become an invasion of privacy if certain acts cross the line such as like the promoters touch the customers without their consent. I feel that if a customer strictly rejected these promoters, they should respect them and not continue to follow and harass them.

The news article that I came across on The Straits Times, Saturday, 31 October 2010, was about Mr Lim Koon Heng who had to depend on a wheelchair for the rest of his life due to an act of sheer folly.

In June 1989, he drove his Yamaha TZR 125 motorcycle to meet his girlfriend despite drinking 5 cans of beer during a celebration with his navy mates at Clifford Pier. Despite his colleague’s advice, he insisted on riding. It was then when he had an accident as he lost control and hit a divider. He was thrown off and, when he landed on his own bag which contained a spare helmet, he broke his spine. He had lost sensation and movement in his body and limbs, with screws drilled into the sides of his head to help straighten the spine and of course he lost his girlfriend as well.

After reading this article, I do pity him. Because of his one moment of poor judgement, he will bring with him the years of regret. He will have to rely on his family from them on which will definitely change his life. Police often push the safety message relentlessly but it doesn’t seem to be working on the youngsters who are always willing to take risks. It was due to these youngsters stubbornness that lead them to accidents and cause them disabilities. By the time they start to regret their actions, it’s all too late. Even if a youngster who is reading this article may still continue to speed, thinking that it is cool to ride fast. What they like is the thrill of speed. They may think that they won’t be as unlucky as him. But who knows?

Hence, I do hope that youngsters should know the risk of speeding and not repeat the same things as what Mr Lim did in the past. Government should show more of the casualties on television that speeding will result to.

Based on this news article taken from The New Paper, 27 October, 2010, I agree that students should dress appropriately to school, for instance no short skirts n no slippers, etc. This is because it gives a bad reputation of the school to the public. Despite knowing that polytechnic have rules and regulations that disallow students to wear revealing clothes and slippers, many of us here do wear. Why? The reasons for these are:

Firstly, students are getting vain and they want to dress up nicely every day. Some of them may chose to dress up to attract the opposite sex. Some even had heavy make-up on them which doesn’t make them look like a student at all. Because polytechnic is a place where you can dress up whatever you like, I have met people who will like to choose polytechnics as their first choice not because of the course they like as their main reason but because of being able to dress up every day. Ridiculous, isn’t it? Another reason is because many students know that polytechnics are not strict in discipline which means, you won’t get caught easily even if you are dressing inappropriately. Hence, this gives a bad impression to the public that polytechnic not only slack and is a “shopping school”

For me, yes, I admit that I am lazy to dress up well every day and I personally do hope that there is uniform in polytechnic. I won’t need to think of what to wear every day then. I hope that one day polytechnic students are to wear school uniform. Isn’t that better? Teachers will not need to bother too much about students wearing short skirts, slippers etc and also I believe it will definitely give a much better impression to the public. But, i know that's impossible.
